The UPSHOT Rules 101

  1. The basketball court measures 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. The free throw line is 15 feet from the basket, and the lane is 16 feet wide.

  2. The three-point line measures 22 feet, 1.75 inches from the top of the key. In the corners, the line straightens to run 3 feet from the sideline, creating an arc that transitions into straight lines before meeting the baseline.

  3. A regulation basketball rim is 18 inches in diameter and mounted 10 feet above the floor.

  4. The official women’s basketball used is 28.5 inches in circumference and weighs approximately 20 ounces.

  5. Each team has 11 players on its roster, with five players required on the court at any time.

  6. Games decided in regulation time consist of four 10-minute quarters.
    • If the score is tied at the end of regulation, teams play 5-minute overtime periods until the winner is decided.
    • Note: At the start of overtime, teams continue in the same direction they ended regulation and a new jump ball is held at center court.
  7. Points are scored as follows: shots made inside the three-point line are scored two points, shots beyond it are scored three points, and free throws are scored one point each.

  8. Defensive fouls occur when a player makes illegal contact while trying to defend an opponent.

  9. Offensive fouls occur when the ball handler, a screener illegally contacts a defender (e.g., charging, moving screen), or an offensive player commits a freedom of movement foul. NOTE: Offensive fouls are personal fouls, NOT team fouls.

  10. If a player is fouled in the act of shooting and misses, the offended player is awarded two or three free throws, depending on the shot attempt. If the basket is made, the offended player is awarded one additional free throw.

  11. Free throw violations: If the shooter or the shooter’s team commits a violation, the attempt is forfeited. If the opposing team commits a violation, the shooter is awarded a substitute free throw if the attempt is missed.

  12. Bonus/Penalty: The offended team will shoot two free throws on each non-shooting foul commencing with the fifth (5th) foul in each quarter committed by their opponent. Also, two (2) free throws will be awarded to the offended team on the second foul committed by an opponent in the last two minutes of each quarter and in the last two minutes of any overtime. “

  13. A player is disqualified when the player receives a sixth (6th) personal foul, two technical fouls, two flagrant fouls or a flagrant foul penalty two (2).

  14. Technical fouls result in one free throw and play resumes at the point of interruption. Technical Fouls do not count as personal or team fouls.

  15. All jump balls are resolved by a jump ball (not by possession arrow).

  16. The team that wins the opening tip also receives possession to begin the fourth quarter, while their opponent gets possession to start the second and third quarters.

  17. Both head coaches and players on the court can call timeouts. When a team calls a timeout with none remaining, the called timeout is nullified, a technical foul awarded to the opponent and this penalty carries a loss of possession.

  18. Each team is allotted Four (4) Full Timeouts and two 20-second timeouts during regulation. If a 20-second timeout is not used in the first half by a team, that team loses one 20-second timeout at halftime. In all Overtime periods, each team receives one full timeout and one 20-second timeout.

  19. Reset Timeout: In the last 2 minutes of the fourth (4th) and any Overtime, each team is allowed One (1) Reset Timeout. A reset timeout allows the calling team to advance the ball to the 28-foot line in the front court. NOTE: Unused Reset Timeouts do NOT carry over.

  20. Halftime: The Fifteen (15) minute halftime period begins immediately once the officials signal to start the permitted time.

  21. Shot Clock: The shot clock period is 24 seconds. Teams must attempt a shot within this time frame. A shot clock violation occurs if the offense fails to attempt a shot before the Shot Clock expires, or if the attempt does not hit the rim before the expiration of shot clock.

  22. An Offensive team has 8-seconds to advance the ball over half court. Both feet and the ball required on a dribble across and on a pass the ball must break the vertical plane of the half court. The magic number on the shot clock is 16.

  23. The defensive three-seconds rule is in effect when the ball is located in the front court. A defender may not remain in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds unless actively guarding an opponent within arm’s length while the ball is in possession of their opponent. D3 is not in effect during loose ball situations.

  24. Starting lineups must be submitted by both teams no later than 30 minutes prior to tip-off. Reasons: Fair Play, Compliance, and Official Game Record.

  25. Each game is officiated by a 3-person crew, with the designated Crew Chief serving as the most experienced, in pro rules administration and mechanics.
